A Checklist for Cleaning Your House for Sale

When getting ready to sell your house you want to make certain you do everything you can to get top dollar.  The first thing you should do, after meeting with a Houston home staging professional, is to get cleaning.

Whether or not you are going to use a professional stager you are going to need to get every part of your home spic and span clean.  Please consider having at least the carpets professionally cleaned.  There is really no way to DIY carpet as well as the pros do.

If you’re going to tackle this on your own or use a cleaning company make sure all the bases are covered.  You can use this checklist to make sure you don’t leave anything out (print your cleaning checklist here):

Outdoor Space – this is your first chance to make a great impression!

  • Power wash driveway, walkways, patios, decks, and fencing
  • Power wash outside of home
  • Clean outside of windows
  • Clean front door – polish the hardware
  • Clean outdoor light fixtures

Entryway/Hallways

  • Mop/vacuum floors
  • Polish console table
  • Dust items on console table
  • Clean light switches and outlet covers
  • Clean light fixture
  • Clean baseboards
  • Clean windows

Living Room/Family Room

  • Mop/vacuum floors
  • Vacuum furniture (both sides of all cushions and base)
  • Vacuum/dust window sills and coverings
  • Polish all wood furniture
  • Clean any glass tops
  • Clean ceiling fans (including lighting pieces)
  • Clean baseboards
  • Dust everything (really, really well)
  • Clean windows
  • Clean out fireplace – clean screen as well
  • Clean lighting fixtures
  • Clean power switches and outlets
  • Clean HVAC vents

Kitchen / Breakfast Nook

  • Mop/vacuum floors
  • Vacuum seat cushions
  • Vacuum/dust window sills and coverings
  • Clean baseboards
  • Clean windows
  • Polish furniture
  • Clean lighting fixtures
  • Clean all appliances (inside and out like your money depends on it – because it does!)
  • Polish counter tops
  • Scrub sink and dry so you have no water spots
  • Clean water fixtures
  • Polish cabinets (dust top of cabinets)
  • Organize inside cabinets and pantry
  • Clean light switches and power outlets
  • Clean HVAC vents

Bedrooms

  • Mop/vacuum floors
  • Clean baseboards
  • Vacuum/dust window sills and coverings
  • Clean windows
  • Polish furniture
  • Clean light fixtures
  • Clean light switches and power outlets
  • Clean HVAC vents

Bathrooms – only absolute cleanliness will do here

  • Scrub floors and baseboards
  • Scrub tub, shower, sinks, and toilet
  • Scrub all fixtures (if you can’t get them perfectly clean consider replacing)
  • Clean windows, sills, and coverings
  • Polish cabinetry
  • Make mirrors sparkle
  • Clean lighting fixtures
  • Clean light switches and power outlets
  • Clean HVAC vents
  • Clean towel bars and rings

    Wow what an awesome list Lori! Very thorough! Thats so true, the details are sometimes the most important. You definitely don’t want to miss anything. If you’re attempting to sell your house, why not do everything 100% right? Thinking long term is crucial when making big life changes so treating the minor things as if they’re the major things will make the difference.
